News, notes & rumors – 9/7
Learned today that St. Augustine’s will not be playing its home games on campus. Money woes continue. Work still needs to be done and school administrators, I’m told, have decided not to take out any more bank loans. Instead, they are asking alumni to contribute toward the George Williams Athletic Complex. Hmmm, Falcons might never get back on campus. St. Aug’s first “home” game is Sept. 21 against SIAC opponent Stillman. Rumor has it the Falcons will return to Durham County Stadium, where Shaw plays its home games, but we’ll find out soon enough.
Not only will no football be played on campus, the NCAA Division II track and field championships that the school was supposed to host next year will now be run at Grand Valley State. This is a shame and such a slap in the face to Athletics Director and legendary track coach George Williams, whom the athletic complex is named after. He was so looking forward to hosting the meet and putting on a show.
