Smashburger's grand opening
If burgers are your specialty, a new restaurant in Durham will become your favorite hangout.
Smashburger has opened at Erwin Road & Downing Street. Yes, the name is what you think it is. Every burger starts out as a ball of 100-percent certified Angus beef that is then smashed on a buttered grill into one of the juiciest burgers you’ll ever taste.
Restaurant owners Ketan and Jayshri Patel held a media tasting Tuesday, and you know we never pass up free food. But freebie aside, the burgers were moist and delicious.
We sampled seven of their signature burgers. Classic Smash is just how it sounds, a classic American burger with cheese, ketchup, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. on an egg bun. If you love mushrooms, the Truffle Mushroom Swiss Burger is right down your alley – stuffed with sautéed crimini mushrooms and aged Swiss cheese.
The Regional Burger (left) was my favorite. This one is based off the region of where the restaurant is located. This regional consist of Duke’s Mayo, diced onions, cole slaw, chili and American cheese on top of the burger in a Pretzel Bun. Sure to be a restaurant favorite.
For vegetarians, there’s the Avocado Ranch Black Bean Burger with avocado, pepper jack, ranch on a multigrain bun. You didn’t know you were eating a meatless burger.
And for chicken lovers, there’s the Avocado Club Chicken with applewood-smoked bacon.
Of course, you have your salads – large enough to feed 2 people – and your sides, including veggie fries. The “smashfries” tossed with rosemary, olive oil and garlic might make you smack somebody for the last bite. And the milk shakes are made with Haagen-Dazs ice cream.
Each order can be customized to any palette. A kid’s menu is coming later in the year.
Located in a convenient area near Duke University and several medical facilities, Smashburger might just mash the competition.
