NCCU vs. Duke football
It's a beautiful day for football. Lots of people are tailgating because they sure aren't in Wallace Wade Stadium with 25 minutes before gametime. The classic wasn't a sellout last year either. Interesting, last year the Sound Machine marching band could perform on the field at halftime because so many members had been suspended for an on-campus incident. This year, head coach Henry Frazier isn't here after being terminated two weeks before. But I'm sure you've heard Frazier isn't going down quietly. He's hired a lawyer to try to get his job back, citing a violating of his civil rights. I think he's just trying to get some type of buyout. Since he was terminated with cause, he didn't get anything. if you made $225,000 a year, wouldn't you try to get sumthin'?!
The Eagles and Blue Devils men's and women's cross-country teams just completed their trek around the stadium and on to the field for their cross-country competition.
NCCU wins toss but elects to defer until the second half. Duke trying to make a statement early by going for it on 4th-and-1. Made it. Now at NCCU's 38 yard line. Eagles defense holds at the 19. Forces Duke to attempt 38-yd field goal. Missed it. Eagles take over at own 28.
Eagles had 3rd-and-2 but couldn't convert. Starting QB Jordan Reid couldn't find anyone open. Duke starts second drive in Eagles territory at 43 with 8:02 left in 1st Q. Blue Devils have advanced to the 5 yard line. Touchdown Duke! QB Brandon Connette hit tight end Braxton Deaver for 3 yds. 7 plays, 43 yards, 2:53 is the scoring drive for a 7-0 lead.
Eagles need to sustain a long drive. Can't afford to get down by more than 2 TDs to Duke.
Eagles start at own 21. Reid is sacked on the second play. Can't find anybody open. 3rd and 13. Finally completes a pass for 1st down to Marvin Poole Good pass to DeMario Johnson. Short 1 yard on 4th down. Going for it at own 41. Actually, were trying to draw the onsides which didn't work. But Reid got a little rhythm going for next time.
Jamison Crowder just ran for 76 yards on the punt return. 14-0 Duke with 18 seconds still left in the 1st Q. Punt return was seventh longest in Duke history.
End of 1st Q. NCCU couldn't have had the ball for more than 5 minutes, but we'll find out when the stats arrive.
Eagles forced to punt again. One more TD by Duke and the game is over.
Stats are in. NCCU had 1 first down and 36 total yards. They actually had the ball for 7 minutes. Duke starting to roll now. And it's hot and muggy outside so by the late third quarter, depth will take over and that's where those extra scholarships a Division I team has come it. NCCU's defense is going to be spent by the fourth quarter.
Good crowd has shown up. Wonder how many folks will still be here after the bands play.
Touchdown Duke! Connette runs in from 1. 10:05 left in 1st half, Duke leads 21-0. One thing Reid said a couple of weeks ago is the team couldn't get down if they got behind. That's what they did last season. They look down and out.
Touchdown Eagles! Tazmon Foster picks up a fumble...no wait, they are going to review the play. Reverses play. Said player never had possession of the ball. And back we go.
Touchdown Duke! Boone runs in from the something. 28-0 Duke. Despite the score, I don't believe this is indicative of NCCU's season. Next Saturday will say it all when the Eagles take on St. Augustine's at 2 p.m. That said, I'm out of here. Plenty of more games on TV and video. Later tonight, Grambling at Alabama A&M, Texas Southern vs. Prairie View, Alabama State at Jacksonville State and more.
